There is no way I would buy a Tesla after the shit we have seem them do. The world will be filled with EVs by the time I buy one, built by car companies. That raises an interesting question, how long will an EV last if you replace the batteries. Potentially pretty long. Some guys in the future will be like, oh yeah bro I have the first EV Porsche made, I upgraded the batteries to modern ones and blah blah. Future mechanics might look more like Star Trek technicians.

Just wait and see how much fun it’s going to be getting parts-and-software support on a 15 year old Model S.

“And oddly, parts access on a 50 year old “keeper” from a real car company like Mercedes Benz is as easy as ever....”

Elon built a car for engineers and nerds. Aftermarket parts and software will  exist, and each one will come with a cease and desist letter from Tesla.

I can’t see this happening, sadly...the electronics would be so locked down and specific to the original layout, it’s hard to mod or repair anything on EVs unless they are home-builts ....look at f armers and their current conundrum with John Deere tract ors, buying older models because they are just so much more easy and cost effective to repair. (I know, not EVs, but part of the issue with the new ones they are having is if an ything goes wrong, they are so computerized they NEED to have the dealership repair them...)

Heh. The shipping packages all have a return address at “Wilson, Sonsini Attorneys At Law”, Page Mill Road, Palo Alto, CA.

The packaging material? Cease-and-Desist Packing Foam.

The real pisser is all the “running changes” in the hardware designs, processors and configurations— they are completely out of control.

I doubt that even a “real computer company” could keep it straight by now.

Hothodding an electric car comes with a exciting new threat of electrocution and/or needing a new set of tools designed around that problem

Yeah I’m sure the stuff will wear out, meant to be recycled. Maybe they will get some Mercedes biodegradable harnesses!

Same here. The cars have many features and high performance numbers. But the laughable build quality, Elon’s shenanigans, and the cooling problems that prevent repeatable performance are enough to make me never buy one. The real car companies will catch up eventually.

For sure, Toyota had a guy die working on a Prius early on and that was at a dealer garage. Maybe in time they will have some plug and play kits for electrifying whatever you want, at least a bit simpler. We already have motors for old cars. Combustion engines are going to be a hobby and the EV people will take over as contemporary tuners. It’s crazy to think how the engines we know haven’t really been around that long. I was looking at some trannies I may want to put in my Dodge and they used the same basic design from the 60s to early 90s in some cases.

I’m sure e very leading company will have comparable EVs fairly soon, there will be no reason to put up with that shit! At this point I would only get a hybrid but in ten years who knows.

You raise a good point--  it’s already scary (have three fire extinguishers handy) to fire up an old Alfa in a garage.  Imagine “firing up” 120 KW-hours of highly flammable lithium in that same garage...

Sure if you pay Classic Center prices! I was going to get an older Merc and then I saw what I would have to get from the Classic Center.... nope!

Yup....I seriously doubt you’d ever be able to take a modern EV, put some new batteries in it 40 years from now and it would just start up fine....it would be poached.
